What you get is the complete Turtle WoW 1.18.1 content on an independent realm: ten playable races including High Elves and Goblins, 59 race and class combinations, eleven Turtle zones, new dungeons and raids, and a quest catalogue of 6,708 quests. Levelling runs at the classic pace, with standard x1 experience, all the way to level 60.
What is Turtle WoW?
Turtle WoW grew out of classic World of Warcraft 1.12, the era many players simply call vanilla. Over roughly eight years its creators kept the slow, social feel of the original game and built on top of it: new playable races, whole new zones on both continents, dungeons that fill the gaps in the levelling curve, race and class pairings the original game never allowed, and hundreds of quests that tie it all together.
The result feels familiar in the first five minutes and surprising for the next five hundred hours. You still walk everywhere until you can afford a mount, you still need a group for the hard elite quests, and you still read the quest text because it tells you where to go. But the road from level 1 to 60 now passes through places like Gilneas, Tel'Abim and Hyjal.
Is Turtle WoW still online?
The original Turtle WoW servers closed in May 2026: the last day of play was 14 May and the servers went offline at midnight on 15 May. Its website, forums and social channels were announced to close on 16 October. If you searched for Turtle WoW and found its old addresses dead, that is why.
This realm is not run by the original team. It is an independent realm that runs the Turtle WoW 1.18.1 content, with its own accounts, and you can play it right now from this page. The full story, with dates and what it means for returning players, is in What happened to Turtle WoW.

Ten races and 59 race and class combinations
Turtle WoW adds two races to the original eight. High Elves join the Alliance and begin in Thalassian Highlands; they can be Warriors, Paladins, Hunters, Rogues, Priests or Mages. Goblins join the Horde and begin on Blackstone Island; they can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues, Mages or Warlocks.
The familiar races gained new options too. On this realm you can roll a Human Hunter, an Orc Mage, a Dwarf Mage or Warlock, an Undead Hunter, a Tauren Priest, a Gnome Hunter or a Troll Warlock – combinations the original 1.12 game did not offer. In total there are 59 race and class combinations. The races and classes guide lists every one of them with its starting zone.
Eleven Turtle zones to explore
The Turtle zones are not decoration: together they hold 659 quests. Each one has its own level band, so you can weave them into a normal levelling route:
- Thalassian Highlands (quests level 1–12) – the High Elf starting area.
- Blackstone Island (1–9) – the Goblin starting area.
- Balor (27–35) and Northwind (28–34) – two new mid-level regions.
- Grim Reaches (30–44) – 82 quests for the long stretch of the thirties.
- Gilneas (38–60) – 81 quests across a wide level band.
- Gillijim's Isle (50–55) and Lapidis Isle (51–55) – islands for the early fifties.
- Tel'Abim (52–60), Moonwhisper Coast (52–60, the largest with 105 quests) and Hyjal (55–60, 95 quests) – the endgame stretch.
See the zones and dungeons guide for quest counts, level ranges and a suggested route.
Your levelling route, zone by zone
The table below puts every Turtle zone and every Turtle dungeon in level order, straight from the realm's game data. Zones show the levels of their quests and how many quests they hold; dungeons and raids show the level you need to enter and how many players they are built for. Classic zones fill the gaps between them, so you are never short of a place to quest.
| Level | Where | Type | Territory | Continent | Quests or group |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–9 | Blackstone Island | Zone | Horde | Kalimdor | 35 quests |
| 1–12 | Thalassian Highlands | Zone | Alliance | Eastern Kingdoms | 56 quests |

| 27–35 | Balor | Zone | Contested | Eastern Kingdoms | 47 quests |

| 50–55 | Gillijim's Isle | Zone | Contested | Eastern Kingdoms | 32 quests |
| 51–55 | Lapidis Isle | Zone | Contested | Eastern Kingdoms | 37 quests |
| 52–60 | Moonwhisper Coast | Zone | Contested | Kalimdor | 105 quests |
| 52–60 | Tel'Abim | Zone | Contested | Kalimdor | 41 quests |
| 55–60 | Hyjal | Zone | Contested | Kalimdor | 95 quests |
| from 55 | Karazhan Crypt | Dungeon | — | — | 5 players |
| from 58 | Black Morass | Dungeon | — | — | 5 players |
| from 58 | Stormwind Vault | Dungeon | — | — | 5 players |
| from 60 | Emerald Sanctum | Raid | — | — | 40 players |
| from 60 | Lower Karazhan Halls | Raid | — | — | 10 players |
Contested zones are open to both factions. A common route is the starting zone of your race up to level 12, classic zones and Frostmane Hollow through the teens, Balor and Northwind in the late twenties, Grim Reaches and Gilneas through the thirties and forties, and the islands, Tel'Abim, Moonwhisper Coast and Hyjal on the way to 60.
New dungeons and raids
Turtle dungeons sit in the level bands where classic WoW had few options. Frostmane Hollow opens at level 13, Dragonmaw Retreat at 25, Windhorn Canyon at 26, Crescent Grove at 32 and Stormwrought Ruins at 35. Gilneas City is a ten-player dungeon from level 40, Hateforge Quarry opens at 48, and Karazhan Crypt, the Black Morass and the Stormwind Vault are level-60 challenges for five players.
At the top end, Lower Karazhan Halls is a ten-player raid and Emerald Sanctum a forty-player one, alongside the classic raids. Dungeon and raid lockouts reset at 04:00 server time.
Classic pace, level 60, x1 rates
Everything runs at standard x1 rates: experience from kills, quests and exploration, rested experience, reputation, honor, money drops and skill gains. The level cap is 60. Nothing is accelerated, so the world stays relevant: a level 30 zone is still worth visiting at level 30, and reaching 60 means something.
Alliance and Horde can play together
On this realm the faction wall is lower than you might expect. Alliance and Horde characters can talk in chat and channels, form groups, join the same guild, trade, use the same auction house, send each other mail and add each other as friends. If your friend rolled a Goblin and you rolled a High Elf, you can still level together.
A world worth exploring slowly
Classic World of Warcraft rewards patience, and the Turtle additions keep that spirit. Grim Reaches alone holds 82 quests for the long stretch of the thirties; Moonwhisper Coast has 105 for the run from 52 to 60. You still travel on foot and by flight path, you still meet other players at the same quest giver, and the dungeons still need a real group of five, with a tank, a healer and three damage dealers who know their job.
That pace is the point. It gives guilds time to form, lets a zone become a memory instead of a blur, and makes every new level feel earned. If you loved the original 1.12 game, this is the version of it with more roads to walk.
Free to play, honestly
Creating an account is free and playing is free. There is no subscription: sign-up asks only for an email address, a username and a password – or you continue with Google or Discord – then you confirm your email and play. Every race, class, zone and dungeon described on this page is open to every account.
Who this realm is for
Returning Turtle WoW players who miss their High Elf or Goblin and want the Turtle zones back without hunting for an old client. Classic players who know vanilla by heart and want new quests, new dungeons and new race and class pairings on top of it. Newcomers curious about the game everyone talks about, who would rather press a button than install a launcher. And friends split across factions, who can finally group, trade and share a guild.
Whichever you are, the start is the same: a free account, a character and a long road from level 1 to 60.

The tested browsers are Chrome, Edge and Firefox on desktop and laptop computers.
